“The world is, no matter how we think it ought to be. You have to be with it. You have to let it be.” Ursula K. Le Guin

We are often unknowingly trapped in narratives we didn’t even choose - stories inherited from the systems to which we belong: from our family of origin, from our community, from our place of work, and even from our ancestors.

The nature of our belonging to these systems influences our actions, often sub-consciously – and not always helpfully. The stories we tell ourselves can serve to make us resistant to change, thus preventing us from tackling the problems we face.

It is this resistance which keeps us bound.

Agency, or power, arises out of acceptance of what is.

On a personal level this might involve accepting:

  • the fears we inherited from our family

  • the loyalties generated by fears of not belonging

  • our inter-generational history

  • what is missing or unacknowledged

  • what can’t be changed

From a broader perspective this might also involve accepting:

  • our judgement or ‘othering’ of those we believe are the problem

  • our cultural shadows and our role as perpetrators as well as victims

  • our fear of change

  • the right place for humanity in our world
